Please feel free to make contact with any questions or to enquire about commissions, she'd love to hear from you.
Since graduating with a BEd in Art,Design and Education in 1985, Helen has continued to follow her passion for creating and learning throughout her career. A home, family and career as a teacher and senior education adviser followed, though she has always maintained her love of all things creative, teaching and making for more than 35 years.
In 2021, with her family now grown up, Helen decided to retire from her high-profile job in education and embark on a new career as a full-time artist, harnessing her desire to both create and educate through her passion for fused and stained glass.
Helen’s transition to glass was a natural evolution, allowing her to combine her love of colour, pattern and form in a new medium. She has more recently studied Masterclasses with Paul Tarlow, Claire Hall, Bob Leatherbarrow and Sylvia Levenson and is continually seeking to develop her skills. She exhibits work locally through galleries and open studio events and is looking to expand opportunities to exhibit across the Southwest.
As well as creating pieces for sale and exhibition, Helen is committed to providing creative, meaningful and exciting workshops and specialist art projects for individuals, schools and community groups. She believes strongly in the power of art to boost emotional wellbeing, providing a sense of wonder and achievement at the transformation which takes place in the kiln. Individual pieces may be incorporated into larger communal items for display or kept by individuals as a memento of their experience…sometimes both!
Helen’s creative portfolio includes a range of beautiful, fused glass items for the home and garden which can be to used day to day, gifted to others or simply to enjoy and admire. Pieces are handmade by fusing layers of clear glass, glass chips, glass paints and a sprinkling of coloured glass frit to create added texture and interest. These are then then fired in Helen’s home studio kiln, sometimes several times over with each firing taking up to 12 hours leaving a smooth or lightly textured finish to the surface. Some items are fired again to alter the shape and function, others may be combined with wood, iron steel and other material to create more sculptural pieces.
If it is something bespoke you are after to add personal style and flair to your home and garden or that of a loved one, or to come along and have a go yourself, Helen would be happy to help. IHelen takes great pleasure in being able to combine her experience as a teacher and sharing her creative passion through 1 to 1, group and party workshops and tuition.
